Moonlight Reprise

Client: Kazu Saito

This is a music video created in collaboration with renowned painter Kazu Saito to promote his Japanese painting - Nihonga.

The video incorporates the concepts of meditation and mindfulness, presenting artworks through slow transitions accompanied by ambient music, thus bringing static paintings to life. It creates an atmosphere of calm and contemplation. As you gaze at it, you are transported into a poetic world, experiencing a moment of tranquility that enhances the overall sense of serenity and introspection.

Hope you enjoy it :)

When I first created the initial version of the animation, I designed the final scene to be a dynamic sunset, with the scene gradually darkening as twilight approached, eventually transitioning to black and smoothly segueing into the end credits. However, Kazu-san later informed me that the original intention of this scene was actually a sunrise, symbolizing the sun just rising, full of hope and anticipation for the future.

Initially, I was unsure how to cleverly transition from a sunrise to the black background typically used for end credits. However, I came up with a better solution: to make the scene progressively brighter, metaphorically representing the beautiful world after the sunrise. So, I decided to use several colors from the original artwork, blending them together to create a vibrant and lively ending. This not only better expressed the artist's original intent but also made the entire video more vivid and engaging.

I am thrilled beyond measure to announce that The Korea Society of Illustration Research (KSIR) for selecting my work “Moonlight Reprise” as Daesang (Grand) Prize! It is an honor to achieve first place in this international competition, which has been running for almost 40 years.

Regarding my work, ever since I was a child, I have been thinking about how to express beauty to other people. When I first saw the artwork from the Japanese artist Kazu Saitou, I was deeply impressed by the beauty and the sense of “Zen” (peaceful and calm) in his artwork and had the desire to share it with others.

After stimulating discussions with Kazu-san, I began to close my eyes and imagine the stilling paintings coming to life in my mind and the work begins to born from that moment.

This recognition is a testament to the countless hours of hard work, dedication, and unwavering passion that I have poured into my craft. Here I would especially like to thank my Professor Jeff Janet and mentor Dr Yun Tae Nam, who have very generously provided support and help me to my research and design practice given valuable feedback on my work progress. My heart is overflowing with gratitude towards all those who have supported me on this incredible journey. I am eager to continue pushing boundaries, creating breathtaking designs, and making a lasting impact in the world of design.

Belinda-san communicated with me very politely, and my expectations grew steadily. The completed Videoworks has finally arrived from her. I superimposed her image of myself on her image. Along with the music, her videoworks have taken me to the next image. I enjoyed the world over and over again. I wanted to spend more time in her visual world. I wanted to see more different visual worlds.

Thank you, Belinda-san. I am deeply grateful to you.
